Traffic Safety

Schools are open. Drivers are reminded to be mindful around schools, school bus stops, and school buses. When following a school bus, they should always be alert to children near the roadway and be prepared for the bus to stop to pick up children. Drivers should also remember the rules of when they are required to stop for the bus.

Parents and children should remember the safety lessons that they have learned about waiting at a bus stop. Don't approach the bus until the driver signals you to do so. Wait several feet from the roadway when waiting for the bus. Be alert to approaching traffic. If that traffic does not appear to be stopping, do not attempt to cross the roadway.

- Slow down - All school zones are posted at 25 mph
- Follow at a safe distance from other vehicles
- Watch for students and pedestrians as they walk to and from schools or bus stops
- Watch for School Crossing Guards as they help our children cross the street safely
- Buckle up yourself and your child
- Be alert to school buses stopping to load or unload children

Resolving Traffic Complaints 

If you have complaints about motorists that speed through your neighborhood or other traffic safety issues, there are steps you can take to correct these situations. The most efficient way to address your traffic safety problems is to either call the Traffic Safety Unit at 328-2573 ext. 2223 or to email the Traffic Safety Unit to report your complaint. (Of course, in emergency situations, you should always call 911.)

Calling or emailing any other county agency first will only result in delays since all traffic safety complaints will be forwarded to the Traffic Safety Unit. The Traffic Safety Unit will return your call as soon as possible.

Report as much information as possible. For example, report the exact time(s) and location that the problems occur. Make note of the year, make, model and color of the vehicle(s) involved. An officer will be assigned to the location to investigate the complaint. After assessing the situation, the officer will recommend appropriate action from directed patrols, to radar, to traffic calming solutions, if applicable.
