Nurse practitioners (NPs) are registered nurses who have additional education and medical training at the masters and/or doctorate level. They are able to take medical histories, perform physical examinations, order diagnostic lab tests and x-rays, diagnose many common illnesses, prescribe medications and other treatments, and refer to specialists. NPs treat a variety of acute and chronic medical conditions but focus on wellness, prevention, and patient education. In Virginia there are over 5500 licensed nurse practitioners!
