Voter registration is free.

 

How can I register to vote?
You can register to vote at any of the following places:

  • Any voter registrar's office in Virginia
  • Any Department of Motor Vehicles location
  • Any special registration site set by the Registrar's Office
  • Many state agency offices

How can I check on whether I am registered to vote?
To inquire about your voter registration status, you must call (804) 501-4347 or write the Registrar's Office at P.O. Box 90775, Henrico, VA 23273-0775.

 

When can I register to vote?
You can register at any time of the year. To vote in a general or primary election, you must register at least 29 days before the election. To vote in a special election, you must register at least 14 days before the election.

 

How can I register to vote if I am homebound?
You may register by mail: Registrar's Office at P.O. Box 90775, Henrico, VA 23273-7032 or call at (804) 501-4347. The Registrar will send you a mail-in application for voter registration. If you are in this category you may vote by absentee ballot.

 

Do I have to register to vote for each election?
No, not if you keep a current address with the Registrar's Office and don't miss voting in two federal elections consecutively.

 

I did not vote in the last election. Do I need to re-register?
No. You don't have to re-register as long as your address is the same.

 

How do I find out where to vote? How do I find out what district I'm in?
The Registrar's website has a polling place locator which names your district and polling (voting) location. Or you may contact the Registrar's Office at (804) 501-4347.

 

Who can register to vote in Virginia?
If you are a U.S. citizen, your home is in Virginia and you are age 18 and older, you can register to vote in Virginia. If you will be 18 by the next general election, you can register when you are 17. If you have been convicted of a felony or if you have been declared mentally incompetent by a circuit court, you must have your voting rights restored.

 

What information do I need to register to vote?
You will need:

  • Your full legal name
  • Your home address and how long you have lived there
  • Your date of birth
  • Your Social Security number
  • The last place you were registered to vote, if any.

When I register to vote, do I register by political party?
No, in Virginia we do not declare a party when registering. Therefore anyone who is registered to vote may vote in any primary, unless it is a dual primary and then they must choose which primary to vote in.

 

When are the polls open?
All polling places are open from 6:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m. on election day.

 

How can I locate magisterial district boundary lines?
A detailed magisterial (voting) district map is available here. Also, by inputting an address on the Registrar's website, you can determine your district.

How do I find out who my elected representatives (congressman, delegate, senator, county supervisor) are?
The Registrar's website has a polling place locator which names your polling location along with the name of your magisterial district for Henrico County, state senatorial and house districts, and federal congressional district.

You will find information on the Board of Supervisors, including names and contact information, at http://www.co.henrico.va.us/departments/supervisors/.

 

Where can I find information on the candidates/issues?
The Registrar's Office cannot provide information on candidates or issues. You must obtain this information from the candidates, political parties, organizations interested in the issues and from local media sources. Statewide issues are advertised in local newspaper. Past and present issues of local newspapers are available at the library.

 

What should I do about my voter registration if I have changed my name or local address since the last election?
You need to notify the Registrar's Office in writing at P.O. Box 90775, Henrico, VA 23273-0775 or stop by any registration site and complete a new application for voter registration.

 

Can I obtain a new voter registration card when I've lost (or washed!) my card?
Yes, please contact the Registrar's Office at (804) 501-4347 to request it and we will mail you a duplicate card, within seven to ten days.

 

What should I do if I move to another Virginia city or county after I register to vote in Henrico?
Send a change of address to either your new registrar or to the Henrico Registrar's Office in writing at P.O. Box 90775, Henrico, VA 23273-0775. Give your name, phone number, Social Security number and old and new addresses. You may use your voter registration card or a plain piece of paper. It must be signed.

 

Can I transfer my voter registration from another state?
No, you must be register in Virginia.

 

May registered voters who are in jail awaiting trial be allowed to vote by absentee ballot?
Yes, but not those who are convicted felons.

 

How do I vote by absentee ballot?
Call the Registrar's Office at (804) 501-4347.

 

When is the deadline for submitting an absentee ballot?
If delivered in person, the deadline is by 5:00 p.m. the Saturday before the election. If the ballot is mailed, the deadline is by 5:00 p.m. the Tuesday before the election.

 

When are absentee ballots counted?
Henrico County has a separate precinct (Central Absentee Voter Election District) where the absentee ballots are counted. The election officials meet on the day of the election and after completing administrative tasks, feed the ballots through a tabulator as they did in the polling places. The absentee ballots are counted and become part of the total votes recorded on election night.

 

I have requested an absentee ballot and now I have changed my mind and want to vote at the polls. May I?
Yes. However, if you received your absentee ballot, you must return it, whether voted or not, to the Electoral Board, at the Office of Voter Registration and Elections. Call (804) 501-4347, Government Center, 4301 East Parham Road, in order to vote at the polls.

 

Why is the Department of Motor Vehicles involved in voter registration?
The National Voter Registration Act of 1993 (also known as Motor Voter) permits persons conducting business at a DMV office to register to vote or update their voter registration information.
